The Silver Thread Scenic Byway has been designated as a U.S. Forest Service National Scenic Byway and connects Creede, Lake City, and South Fork. Silver Thread gets its name not only from the rich veins of silver ore that lured many miners and settlers, but also from the route that weaves along spectacular river canyons and passes over the Continental Divide.

Immerse yourself into the amazing beauty of the San Juan Mountains as you travel this 75-mile route. This year-round highway courses through both the Rio Grande and Gunnison National Forests. Beautiful, breathtaking overlooks offer insight into geology and local history and provide many opportunities to enjoy spectacular views.

wheelerWheeler Geological Monument

Wheeler is 640 acres of haunting landscape in the Rio Grande National Forest. The "jumbled mass of pinnacles and domes" is accessible via a 7-mile hike or a grueling 14-mile four wheel drive road. Your efforts are rewarded by views of a remarkable geologic formation of moderately coarse volcanic tuff eroded into many different shapes. Advice is to plan a whole day trip or even an overnight trip in order to travel into Wheeler, enjoy the formations, and then get back out.  It is not a short, easy trip, but one that is certainly worth the effort!

Wolf Creek Pass

Beautiful drive year-round. Pass by (or visit!) Wolf Creek Ski Area, take the short hike up to Treasure Falls, and stop at any of the scenic overlooks! This scenic and historic pass was the inspiration for the CW McCall song, about a pair of truckers who drive an out-of-control Peterbilt down the steep pass!

Today the park protects nearly 5,000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. These sites are some of the most notable and best preserved in the United States.
